Michael D. Schrunk
Michael D. Schrunk has been the elected District
Attorney in Multnomah County, Oregon, since 1981. Multnomah
County encompasses the largest metropolitan area in the State
of Oregon and has a population of 672,161. The Multnomah County
District Attorney's Office has over 200 staff members, including
90 attorneys. In 2005 the office reviewed 31,752 criminal
cases. It issued 6,906 felony cases and 15,724 misdemeanor
cases.
Mr. Schrunk is a graduate of the University
of Oregon Law School. He has extensive experience in prosecution
of criminal cases and, while in private practice, represented
plaintiffs and defendants in civil litigation and defended
criminal cases. He served as a Captain in the
U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam and is past president of
the Multnomah County Bar Association and the Oregon District
Attorney's Association.
Mr. Schrunk has been a leader in several innovative
justice initiatives: the Neighborhood District Attorney Program
in 1990; the Drug Court in 1991; and Portland's Community
Court Project in 1998. He currently chairs the Regional Organized
Crime Narcotics Task Force and is a member of Multnomah County's
Public Safety Coordinating Council. He has served as a lecturer
for the National
College of District Attorneys, the National
Advocacy Center, the American
Prosecutor's Research Institute, and the Drug
Enforcement Administration. He has provided articles and
reviews for the Bureau
of Justice Assistance and the National
Institute of Justice. Mr. Schrunk is the recipient of
several national awards including the U.S. Department of Justice's
Public Service Award for Community Leadership.
