DA Mike Schmidt announces arraignment of suspect in two shootings

PORTLAND, Oregon – Today Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced that Carlos Rodriguez-Lanz, 40, was arraigned on Tuesday, February 1, on seven charges stemming from two shootings last year.

In August of 2021, Portland Police responded to a shooting call in Northeast Portland and found a woman lying near a bus stop with a gunshot wound to the leg. The victim reported to police that she was shot by a man in a red car exiting a nearby gas station, and a single shell casing was found at the scene. The victim had to be taken to the hospital for treatment of her injuries. The subsequent investigation identified Rodriguez-Lanz as the shooter.

Two months later, in October, Portland Police responded to a shooting call in Northeast Portland and found a man suffering from gunshot wounds to his head. The gunshot wounds caused serious injuries that required hospitalization. Witness reports indicated between five to 10 gunshots could be heard near where the shooting occurred. Shell casings found at the scene of the October shooting were linked to the casing collected from the August shooting, and subsequent investigation and video surveillance revealed that Rodriguez-Lanz was also the shooter.

Rodriguez-Lanz has been indicted on one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, two counts of Assault in the First and Second Degree, two counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and two counts of Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

A charging document is only an accusation of a crime. Rodriguez is innocent unless and until proven guilty.
