Grand Jurors: How We help with Trauma
A First-of-Its-Kind Support Program in Our Office
Since January 2025, our office has launched a dedicated Secondary Trauma Support Program for Grand Jurors—a proactive step to address the emotional and psychological impact of reviewing difficult and often distressing case material. Exposure to trauma is a recognized occupational hazard in the justice system, and our commitment to juror wellness reflects our broader mission of integrity, compassion, and community care.
What the Program Offers
Our support program is thoughtfully designed and grounded in evidence-based practices. It includes:
- Introductory Training: A 30-minute orientation session covering the basics of secondary trauma, self-care strategies, and how to recognize signs of distress.
- Self-Care Tools: Somatic practice guides and handouts that offer accessible techniques to manage stress.
- Stress Relief Resources: Fidget tools are provided in jury rooms to help manage tension and maintain focus during proceedings.
- Weekly Follow-Ups: We provide regular wellness check-ins to offer continued support and a point of connection.
Positive Impact on Juror Well-Being
The response to this initiative has been overwhelmingly positive. Many jurors have shared that simply knowing support is available brings a sense of calm and reassurance. They feel seen, heard, and cared for—a small but powerful shift in a process that can often feel emotionally isolating.
