DA Mike Schmidt announces arraignment of suspect in vehicular manslaughter

PORTLAND, Oregon – Today Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced that Ayzaiah Walker, 22, was arraigned on five charges on Tuesday, February 1, 2022, stemming from a fatal collision earlier this year.

On the evening of January 20, 2022, Walker was driving a Honda Accord northbound on Southeast McLoughlin Blvd. As he approached the red light at the intersection of Southeast McLoughlin Blvd and Southeast Holgate Blvd he failed to stop and struck another vehicle, a Toyota Camry, which was proceeding eastbound on Southeast Holgate on a green light.

The impact caused both vehicles to spin and proved fatal to the passenger of the Camry. The driver of the Camry was transported to the hospital as a result of injuries from the collision.

Portland Police officers responded to the scene and found Walker’s Accord vacant. Walker and one of the passengers in his vehicle were located by police behind the gas station near the collision. Subsequent investigation found that Walker was intoxicated and that his driving privileges were suspended at the time of the accident.

Walker and one of his passengers were transported to hospitals for treatment of their injuries, and a second passenger in Walker’s vehicle sustained minor injuries. Video surveillance confirmed that Walker was the driver of the Accord and the circumstances of the collision.

Walker has been charged with Manslaughter in the First Degree, two counts of Assault in the Third Degree, Driving Under the Influence of Intoxicants, and Reckless Driving.

A charging document is only an accusation of a crime. Walker is innocent unless and until proven guilty.
