DA Mike Schmidt announces suspect of multiple fatal shootings arraigned, in custody

PORTLAND, Oregon – Today, Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt announced that Joseph Banks, 49, has been arraigned on 15 charges that stemmed from multiple shootings, three of which lead to fatalities, between January 2, 2022, and March 1, 2022. 

Banks’ charges include three counts of Murder in the Second Degree with a Firearm, two counts of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree with a Firearm, one count of Attempted Murder in the First Degree with a Firearm, three counts of Assault with First Degree with a Firearm, three counts of Assault in the Second Degree with a Firearm and three counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon with a Firearm. 

Banks is currently in custody at the Multnomah County Jail without bail. No additional information can be released by the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office at this time. 

A charging document is only an accusation of a crime. Banks is innocent unless and until proven guilty.
