DA Mike Schmidt provides community statement in response to weekend shootings

“There have been several shootings in the last 72-hours. These shootings have spanned our neighborhoods from East to West.

My heart goes out to those that have lost a loved one to this violence. When a person decides to pick up a gun and use it to threaten, harm, and take away another person’s life, it doesn’t happen in a vacuum. It sends shockwaves across our entire community.

As your District Attorney, I remain committed to holding perpetrators of violence accountable to the fullest extent of the law. Likewise, I am overcome with gratitude for the people on the front lines responding to these tragedies.

For every fatal shooting, police officers, medical workers, prosecutors, and even neighbors put their safety at risk, and often their lives on hold. This takes an incredible toll. This work is traumatic and difficult if not impossible to leave at the door when you get home. Thank you.

As I and everyone in my office work diligently to review the facts and evidence of each shooting, issue charges, and prosecute, we hold two infallible truths closest to our hearts: victims deserve justice and harm cannot and will not go unaccounted for.”
