MAN WHO DROVE VEHICLE INTO HOMELESS CAMP PLEADS GUILTY TO MANSLAUGHTER AND ATTEMPTED MURDER

Case: 24CR090805

Portland, OR- On June 9,2025 Shane Martin McKeever, 23-years-old, pled guilty to Manslaughter in the First Degree and no contest to Attempted Murder in the Second Degree after he drove his vehicle over a curb and into a transient camp, hitting and killing a man.

Sentencing is set for August 19, 2025. Both the prosecution and defense will ask Multnomah County Circuit Judge Christopher Marshall to sentence McKeever to 192 months in prison (16 years) for the Manslaughter in the First Degree charge, along with 90 months for the Attempted Murder in the Second Degree charge which would be served at the same time as the 16 year sentence.

Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Austin Buhl prosecuted the case.

After the pleas he said “Despite living a difficult life on the streets of Portland, David Bentley was a very well-liked individual in his community who was killed for simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time in a random act of extreme violence. He had just started to reconnect with his family and was taking steps to better his life when it was abruptly taken from him by Shane McKeever. It is our hope that this resolution will provide some measure of justice to Mr. Bentley’s family as they continue to deal with the impact of his untimely passing.”

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office would like to thank Portland Police Bureau Officer Chase Fullington and Detective Eric McDaniel for their outstanding work on this case.

The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office would also like to recognize MCDA Victim Advocate Nang Dunn for the compassion and care she showed the victims in this case.

THE FACTS:

On February 25, 2024, at the intersection of SE Belmont St. and SE Grand Ave. (underneath the Morrison Bridge on ramp), Defendant Shane McKeever drove his vehicle onto the curb at a transient camp and struck victim David Bentley, then performed a U-turn and attempted to strike a second individual. Multiple witnesses later told police that it appeared as if the Defendant was intentionally trying to run people over in the camp. Gunshots were fired towards the Defendant from an unknown direction, so he abandoned the vehicle in the street and ran away on foot. Individuals living in the nearby camp followed the Defendant and pointed him out to police as the driver. Mr. Bentley was found in a nearby parking lot suffering from serious injuries and was pronounced deceased shortly thereafter. Officers were later able to retrieve data from the vehicle’s Airbag Control Module, which reveals that the Defendant was driving about 46 mph with full acceleration and brakes disengaged about 0.5 seconds prior to impact.
