Multnomah County District Attorney Mike Schmidt today announced that a Multnomah County Circuit Court judge sentenced Ricardo Bernaldez-Molina, 39, to 10 years in prison for a 2022 attempted murder in Gresham.
Incident
On March 10, 2022, officers from the Gresham Police Department responded to Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center on reports that a gunshot victim had arrived to receive medical care. Officers learned from a witness that the shooting happened at a restaurant located at SE 188th and East Burnside Street in Gresham, and that the shooter had fled the scene by car. Through their investigation, detectives later identified Ricardo Bernaldez-Molina as the suspect, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. He was taken into custody on September 16, 2022. The victim suffered two gunshot wounds, one to the chest and one to the leg, and was discharged from the hospital after several weeks.
Bench Trial
Deputy District Attorneys Leslie Wu and Channa Newell represented the state at trial, which took place in front of Senior Judge Kenneth Walker on March 4, 2024. Judge Walker delivered his verdict that day finding Bernaldez-Molina guilty of four charges:
- One count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree
- One count of Assault in the First Degree with a Firearm
- One count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm
- One count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon with a Firearm
Judge Walker also found Bernaldez-Molina not guilty of one additional count of Unlawful Use of a Weapon with a Firearm. He imposed the 10-year sentence on March 18, 2024.
Bernaldez-Molina is currently in custody in Multnomah County and will be transported to the Oregon Department of Corrections to serve his sentence.
The DA’s Office wishes to thank the Gresham Police Department officers and detectives who assisted with this case.
