“Shortly after the murder occurred, I recall being in the St Johns neighborhood and there being signs posted on the telephone polls in honor of the victim in this case. He was a strong member of the community up there…the loss of him in our community is really beyond words,” Senior Deputy District Attorney Todd Jackson stated at sentencing. 

“This loophole diminishes the ability of the prosecution to move forward on a case with all competent evidence, which in turn reduces the ability of a victim of sexual assault to pursue justice.” MCDA Policy Director Aaron Knott stated.

Cox appeared to be angry, carrying a hatchet in one hand while his other hand was balled into a fist. A cyclist passed Cox and he began to chase them. The cyclist observed Cox chasing him and rode away to avoid him at which point Cox threw the hatchet at the cyclist, nearly hitting him.

“This should have been a routine stop of a suspect operating a stolen car. Instead, Mr. Dahlen caused needless harm to a Portland Police Officer to avoid accountability for his actions.” Senior Deputy District Attorney Todd Jackson said.

“The Bias Crime data dashboard is intended to stand in stark opposition to acts of hate while providing a practical tool for policymakers, leaders, and the communities most impacted by bias crimes.” DA Schmidt stated.

Rodriguez-Lanz has been indicted on one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, two counts of Assault in the First and Second Degree, two counts of Unlawful Use of a Weapon, and two counts of Felon in Possession of a Firearm.

The impact caused both vehicles to spin and proved fatal to the passenger of the Camry. The driver of the Camry was transported to the hospital as a result of injuries from the collision. 

“As we address our public safety challenges with an eye towards equity, harm reduction, and improved outcomes across Oregon, we must focus our efforts on addressing these disparities across all systems,” MCDA Policy Director Aaron Knott stated. 

“If you were convicted prior to the cutoff for direct appeal, you may well be denied relief, simply because of timing. Justice should not, and does not, function in this manner. Constitutional rights should not depend on luck or timing.” Knott continued. 

If a business is burglarized, this legislation would ease the path to reimbursement for a broken window, lock, register, and other damages that occur as a result of a break-in.
