“This plea agreement accomplishes everything my client wanted out of this case. His biggest concern was that Mr. Drennan acknowledges and takes responsibility for his abhorrent behavior; he never wished him ill-will or wanted him to go to prison, nor did he want to testify at a trial.” Stated Josh Lamborn, the victim’s private attorney.
“Every time there is a homicide in Multnomah County, our office is called to the scene and many times victims require an advocate present during the life of a case. When we interact with victims, the last thing we want is for them to worry whether or not they are at risk of contracting COVID-19. Our priority is to heal the harm.” Victim Advocate, Chanel Thomas said.
In closing arguments, Senior Deputy District Attorney Vasquez cited that in Mr. Swinney’s mind, he came to Portland to fight terrorists when in fact, “there was only one terrorist in Portland on those days, and it was Alan Swinney.” Mr. Swinney’s sentencing date has not yet been determined.
Pursuant to ORS 132.270, the Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office will file a motion and request that the court authorize the release of a grand jury transcript for public review.
At sentencing, the victim and her mother told the court about the extensive negative impacts of Mr. Moo-Caamal’s crimes. The Honorable Judge Benjamin Souede directly addressed the victim and commended her for the bravery, courage and strength she showed during her trial testimony and again at sentencing.
“I have nightmares where I don’t have a voice. I try to scream and nothing comes out,” described one of the victims. At age 13, she decided to report the abuse after watching YouTube videos of other survivors sharing their stories of childhood sexual abuse. “I found strength listening to survivors talk about their experiences and hearing how things got better for them after they spoke out.”
“We emphatically support the MCDA’s effort to make gun crime data more accessible to the community. Clear, accessible data is one of the best tools we have to inform public policy around reducing gun violence and it allows us, as a community, to track our progress toward shared goals. Ending gun violence in Portland and surrounding communities will require a highly coordinated, whole of community effort. We appreciate and thank MCDA for their steadfast partnership.” Acting US Attorney Scott Erik Asphaug stated.
